Guitar Player

As a guitar player in the US Army Bands, you will be expected to perform in many different styles and ensembles. You will perform in rock band, jazz band, jazz combo, and other popular music ensembles such as Latin/salsa band, or country band. All guitar players must be skilled and experienced in electric guitar as well as acoustic. Additionally, it is common for guitar players to supplement the percussion section when needed in concert band or during marching performances.

Audition Requirements

Part 1: Ceremonial/Patriotic Music

Ceremonial music plays an integral part in our job as military musicians. You will be provided a packet of ceremonial music prior to your audition. In addition to the music provided, you will also be required to prepare one of the following patriotic selections: “God Bless the USA,” “God Bless America,” “American Soldier,” or “America the Beautiful.

Part 2: Prepared Music

This is your time to show off your unique talents and skills. We are looking for musicians who are versatile and who have experience in many different styles of music. Guitar players should prepare three to four selections of contrasting styles to emphasize your technical, musical, and stylistic ability. Ask your band liaison to provide suggestions and discuss appropriate repertoire if you have any questions. It is suggested that you pick a song from each of the following categories:

  • Pop/Rock/Country/R&B
  • Swing/Jazz/Bebop/Blues
  • Latin (Bossa/Samba/Salsa)
  • Jazz Ballad

*Accompanying backing tracks should be used*

Part 3: Music Preparation

This portion of the audition judges how well you can quickly prepare music as if you were called to sub on a gig with short notice. The evening prior to your audition, your band liaison will send you a packet of music of various styles. As a rhythm player, you will be expected to play the written melody, comp over the changes in the appropriate style, and improvise a solo over the changes. You will be responsible for preparing the music by your scheduled audition time.

Part 4: Additional Skills

The Army Bands values additional skills that musicians bring to our organization. You may receive additional points on your audition if you choose to demonstrate any of the following: doubling, singing, and/or backing track production. Please discuss with your band liaison what would be appropriate to prepare should you wish to demonstrate an additional skill.
