The 282nd Army Band at Fort Jackson, South Carolina was honored to play for First Lady Michelle Obama at the graduation ceremony for the 1st Battalion 34th Infantry Regiment at Hilton Field. First Lady Obama came to Fort Jackson on January 27, 2011 to promote her “Let’s Move” initiative. The “Let’s Move” campaign addresses the issues of childhood obesity in our youth which are a decrease in overall activity as well as poor nutritional diets. This was the second time a first lady has visited Fort Jackson. The first visit was from First Lady Laura Bush in 2001. For the 282nd Army band it is always a privilege to perform for such high ranking dignitaries. This ceremony was no exception and the band was filled with excitement and anticipation to perform for the first lady.

In the days prior to the First Lady’s visit, the 282nd Army Band was busy preparing the music for the ceremony. “Although the First Lady is a VIP, this was a very typical Thursday graduation ceremony for the band” said CW3 Scott MacDonald, Commander of the 282nd Army Band.
