300th Army Band Prepares for TAFDA Concert

By COL Mark Scatolini
63rd RRC G3-OPS Plans Officer

The 300th US Army Band (USAR), a unit of the 63rd Regional Readiness Command (USAR), is preparing for three upcoming performances in support of the City of Torrance’s “47th Annual Armed Forces Day Activities (TAFDA)” over the 19-21 MAY 2006 weekend.

Each year, the third Saturday in May is, by US Congressional decree, ‘Armed Forces Day.’ The city of Torrance boasts one of the nations longest continuous Armed Forces Day parades which pays tribute to Service men and women, both current and veterans, who have proudly served this country. This year, the US Army is the lead DoD Agency (the ‘Honored Service’), although representatives from all five services participate in TAFDA activities. The 300th US Army Band will be the Army’s featured band and represent the three branches of the Army and all five services for the weekend TAFDA festivities.

On Friday, 19-May, the 300th US Army Band will perform two public concerts in the James Armstrong Theater, Torrance Cultural Arts Center (a 1 pm show for the general public and a 7 pm show for the Mayor of Torrance and VIPs). The band is rehearsing a robust repertoire of patriotic and military music, including Sousa favorites. The band will also play pop/jazz and latin/rock numbers as a Beatles medley and Mustang Sally.

On Saturday, 20-May, the 300th US Army Band will march in the 47th Annual Armed Forces Day Parade. The parade route covers four miles down Torrance Blvd, where an estimated 400,000 Southern California citizens will cheer and pay tribute to our Service members. The band plays military favorites as Stars and Stripes Forever and The Thunderer. The 300th US Army Band is an annual crowd favorite, as evidenced by their many TAFDA Parade Best awards in their trophy case at their Bell, CA home.

The 300th US Army Band is commanded by CW2(P) Steven Groneberg and acting 1SG Chritine White is the unit’s senior Enlisted advisor. For more information about TAFDA-06 or the 300th US Army Band, please contact Mr. Martinez, the unit administrator, at: (323)307-3344
