The final weeks of 2014 brought ample opportunity for the 3rd Infantry Division Band to provide musical support and boost the holiday spirits of military personnel and civilians in Afghanistan. The year’s close brought the end of NATO’s combat mission in Afghanistan and Rocky V (the 3rd ID’s deployed brass quintet) participated in the casing of ISAF’s colors on December 28th in Kabul. This mission, along with morale performances on Bagram, highlighted the various roles of Army Music in the deployed environment.

Rocky V joined the singing congregation at Bagram’s Christmas Eve Candlelight Service and performed for two Christmas meals in dining facilities the following day. The 3rd ID’s brass band, Hearing Protection Required, entertained appreciative members of the 3rd MEDCOM and 25th Signal Battalion at their respective Christmas parties the week leading up to the holiday. Following Christmas, Hearing Protection Required has begun to highlight more recent popular music in their set-list including “All About that Bass” and “Happy.”

Security was high in Kabul as Rocky V participated in the casing of ISAF’s colors and the uncasing of those representing Operation Resolute Support. The end of Operation Enduring Freedom and the presence of so many NATO military leaders, ambassadors, and dignitaries made for a truly historic mission. At a reception following the ceremony, the quintet was awarded Certificates of Appreciation from the headquarters’ Base Support Group.

As the New Year approached, Hearing Protection Required rang out 2014 with an outdoor concert featuring trombonist SGT Brian Bohannon singing “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” A video of the performance is now on the Band’s Facebook page -- https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10152969456542812
