This past Tuesday, 10 February 2015, the 3rd Infantry Division Band’s acoustic rock ensemble, Lo! Krawl performed a surprise flash mob concert in an outdoor courtyard on Bagram Air Field around lunchtime. In a deployed environment it is easy for soldiers to fall into a monotonous routine, with little variation from day to day. It was the initiative of COL John W. Thompson, Chief of Staff, US Forces-Afghanistan to break up that monotony by tasking the band play this surprise concert for the purpose of overall troop morale.

The audience response was overwhelming! The unsuspecting soldiers of BAF were both amazed and captivated by the performance; many even chose to carry their lunches outside to enjoy the rest of the show. Performing covers of a wide array of hits such as “Rolling in the Deep”, “More Than a Feeling”, “Wagon Wheel”, and (by special request) “Turn the Page” there was certainly something for everyone to enjoy. As the show progressed, soldiers and civilians alike could be seen dancing, singing, and clapping along to the music being performed. One contractor even approached the group between sets to remark how impressed he was that the group could effectively execute such a variety of musical selections spanning so many styles and genres.

Band members have since received many gracious thanks and praise regarding the performance. “You all are true entertainers…” commented SPC Katherina Arrington, Supply Clerk, HHC, “I loved everything about the surprise concert! I love surprises, and it was awesome to get out of the office on such a nice day.”
