On Friday, June 19, 2015 hundreds of Vietnam War veterans, some having traveled great distances, gathered at Fort Stewart, Georgia to be honored at a homecoming ceremony that was decades in the making. Marking the 50th Anniversary of such a historic conflict, this short, symbolic walk celebrated years of service, valor, and sacrifice.

Families, friends, Soldiers, and community members crowded the stands as they marched on to Cottrell Field, receiving the hero’s welcome that had eluded them for so many years. Over five hundred Vietnam veterans reunited for the occasion; some in wheelchairs, others guided with canes; yet the pride emanating from the formation of troops was unmistakable.

“It is important to honor those that served before us,” says Sgt. 1st Class Julio De La Rosa, acting 1st Sgt. for the 3rd Infantry Division Band. “Today’s Army stands on the shoulders of their accomplishments and sacrifices.”
