2015 Joint Forces Chamber Recital, Musicians from the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own," the U.S. Marine Band "The President's Own," the U.S. Air Force Band, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, the US Navy Band, and honored guest conductor Lt. Col. Tod Addison, U.S. Army, FORSCOM, Fort Bragg, NC.
On the 28th of April, 2015, a landmark event took place in the field of military music. Musicians from premier music ensembles of each of our 5 military services, the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the U.S. Marine Band “The President’s Own,” the U.S. Navy Band, the U.S. Air Force Band, and the U.S. Coast Guard Band, came together on for the 2015 Joint Forces Chamber Recital. Hosted by the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Chamber Concert series, the event took place on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 7:30 PM in Brucker Hall on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, VA. Just as our military services regularly combine forces to accomplish missions out in the field, this event brought together the best of the best musicians from our premier bands in the National Capitol Region and the US Coast Guard Band in Connecticut to perform on one of the most significant collaborative concerts in recent military music history. Many were in attendance and the number of online views continues to rise as word spreads of the success of this performance. The event was webcast live, and is now available to view at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYioSBw9UBs

The program included: "Quartet V in D Major" by Joseph Haydn for flute, violin, viola, and cello; "Night of the Four Moons" by George Crumb for alto flute/piccolo, alto voice, cello, percussion, and banjo; Fife and Drum medleys “Smokey Waters” and “ Drowsy Peter,” arranged by John Ciaglia, John Benoit, and Scott Mitchell; "Nonet" by Bohuslav Martinu for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, violin, viola, cello, and double bass; and "Pie in the Face Polka" by Henry Mancini for flute, brass quintet, and drum set (arr. Ioan Stefanescu, drum set arr. Sgt. 1st Class Mario Ramsey)

Led by Staff Sgt. Troy Paolantonio, coordination began starting back in Spring of 2014, with special assistance in gathering personnel from Sgt. 1st Class Marlisa Woods of the U.S. Army Band, and the unrelenting support and enthusiasm of Sgt. 1st Class Tom Dell’Omo with adding the event to the “Pershing’s Own” Chamber Concert Series. Rehearsal times and space were coordinated, occurring just a day or so prior to the performance, some with minimal run through just hours before the event. Lt. Col. Addison, (U.S. Army, FORSCOM Fort Bragg, NC) brought his renowned energy and superb attention to detail with conducting the Martinu Nonet. Lt. Col. Addison volunteered his time and talents to be a part of this event and was one of the first to give an enthusiastic “YES!” to being on board. Every musician came prepared with his or her total “A-Game!” With a limited amount of rehearsal time, every selection of music came together as if the groups had been performing together regularly.

The Stage/Audio/Visual/Production and Public Affairs staff of the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” were superb in their quick and comprehensive handling of the printing of programs and management of the technical and stage elements of the performance. Special thanks to Sgt. Maj. Craig Lauinger, Sgt. 1st Class Mark Nixon, Sgt. 1st Class Brian Ross, and Master Sgt. Beverly Benda of the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own”. All command teams and support staff from each organization were instrumental in the success of this program with granting permission for their musicians to participate. Significant thanks goes to: Col. Timothy Holton and Sgt. 1st Class Emily Leader (U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own”); Chief Warrant Officer 3 Joseph Newby, Sgt. Maj. William White, Master Sgt. Eric Divine, Master Sgt. Joshua Dukes, Master Sgt. Sandra Quaschnick, Staff Sgt. Heather Tribble, and Staff Sgt. Casey Paulozzi (U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps); Chief Warrant Officer 3 Brian Burian, Master Sgt. Kristin DuBois, Gunnery Sgt. Amanda Simmons (U.S. Marine Band “The President’s Own”); Musician Senior Chief Petty Officer William Gray, Musician Master Chief Petty Officer Aaron Porter (U.S. Navy Band); Master Sgt. Brooke Emery and Master Sgt. Robert Connolly (U.S. Air Force Band); and Musician Chief Petty Officer Heather Doughty (U.S. Coast Guard Band). This event would not have happened had it not been for the support and efforts of every name mentioned.

Whether it be for arrivals and events on the White House lawn, retirement ceremonies of significant military personnel, marching in the Presidential Inaugural Parade once every four years, or the once in a lifetime experience of collaborating with individual musicians from each of our military’s premier ensembles for the masterful playing of classic and entertaining chamber music, one thing is for sure...

When the best of the best of our military and our musicians come together, the possibilities are limitless. May the 2015 Joint Forces Chamber Recital serve as an inspiration for more great things to come in the future!
